Boot Camp – Working With and Leading Offshore/Onshore Teams

This Boot Camp targets virtual teams working together in India and North America and is made up of four distinct modules.

Module 1: Managing Offshore Teams for High Performance 

Teams that work together at the same location face challenges in their day-to-day interactions. A team with global team members makes for an even tougher situation. Time zones, lack of face-to -face interaction, travel budget restrictions, miscommunication, linguistic challenges and cultural differences all impact the team’s ability to be effective.

At the end of the session the participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the 3 key activities to conduct at the beginning of a project to ensure a strong foundation between offshore teams in India and North American counterparts
  • Select the 3 tasks that a lead point of contact should be focusing on
  • Define the characteristics of a lead/point of contact
  • List the communication strategies to ensure a virtual team is communicating effectively
  • Differentiate when to use open ended and closed ended questions
  • Describe a communication model and apply the process to offshore teams
  • Determine how a person’s words can impact their counterparts
  • Develop an action plan

Module 2: How to Optimize Virtual Team Meetings 

When virtual meetings aren’t as effective and efficient as they could be, your organization suffers in lost productivity, missed deadlines and potentially decreased profits. In this session, you will learn how to organize an efficient, engaged, and productive virtual meeting, as well as learn strategies to overcome common challenges faced in virtual meetings with offshore/onshore teams

At the end of the session the participants will be able to:

  • Identify the skills needed to effectively facilitate a virtual team meeting
  • Identify 7 techniques to improve your virtual meetings
  • Discuss challenges to effective virtual meeting and develop solutions to those challenges
  • Evaluate meeting best practices

Module 3: Making Norms the Norm: How to Create a Team Operating Agreement (TOA) 

Virtual Teams need to have guidelines around how to work together. Setting agreed-upon team norms is a best practice to help global teams work more efficiently together. In this session, you will learn how to develop a Team Operating Agreement that will foster a strong, effective virtual team.

At the end of the session the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role that expectations play and how to manage them
  • Analyze how a TOA can help build a cohesive virtual team
  • Define the components of a Team Operating Agreement
  • List a seven step process to creating a Team Operating Agreement
  • Develop the guidelines by which your offshore/onshore teams will operate

Module 4: Facilitated Team Operating Agreement

In this facilitated session the North American and India teams will discuss the TOA items they created in their individual sessions and determine which items will become their agreement upon norms.
