Program Overview

Virtual communication has become essential in our day-to-day personal and professional lives. It is in our best interest to interact effectively in our virtual assessments. To some, engagement with others virtually may come naturally, but to most it is a learned skill. Some of the challenges typically encountered along the learning curve include:

  • 90% of virtual team members acknowledge they do other things during conference calls
  • 82% of virtual teams fall short of their goals
  • 33% of virtual teams rate themselves as largely unsuccessful
  • Projects outsourced to virtual work groups found that 66% failed to satisfy the clients’ requirements
  • 90% of virtual team members say they don’t have enough time during virtual meetings to build relationships
  • Ineffective use of face-to-face solutions to virtual team challenges

This is a virtual program taught live over eight two-hour sessions, and one four-hour session, in a real-time, highly interactive virtual environment. Each session deals with a specific aspect of the Virtual  Environment. You won’t be just talking about the learned techniques—you will be experiencing them throughout each session.

MODULES
Session 1: Setting the Ground Work (2 hours)

Virtual team building is skyrocketing!  Six years ago, 45 million employees worked remotely at least once a week. The virtual workforce will soon hit over 100 million and it is growing. Perhaps more important than the numbers is the strong impact effective virtual teams are having on their companies – saving costs, boosting productivity, enhancing job satisfaction and improving cash flows and financial bottom line. Successful ‘virtual teams’ are no longer just telecommuters with email and cell phones. Making and managing the transition from traditional models of organizational operations to a virtual environment requires a strong foundation of trust, communication and camaraderie … all capabilities this session will teach to the participants. Participants in this session will learn how to communicate effectively within a virtual team setting and build cohesive teams that best facilitates communication and collaboration among virtual team members.

Session 2: The Communication Connection: Getting It Right (2 hours)
Virtual teams must learn to work together as if they were in the same room. The balance of any great team is dependent on the interaction of different personality types. This session uses the DiSC Behavioral Profile to address four of the most common challenges that virtual teams face: motivation, conflict, connection and  communication. Gaining insight into these elements can help us understand how to build stronger virtual teams and have more successful team members. In this session you and your team will learn to increase awareness of the relationship between individual behaviour styles and the team’s performance. This is critically important in a virtual environment where creating an atmosphere of trust can be difficult to achieve.

Session 3: Building Relationships at a Distance (2 hours)
The truth is it’s hard for virtual teams to always bond on a personal level with other team members…partly (well, mostly) because we may not even know what our team members look like! Without bonding, the results could be dangerous. Environmental Medicine showed that a lack of team spirit can even cause employee depression. Before you scurry off to Google, furiously searching “how to engage virtual teams”—take a breath. We’ve done the work for you. In this session you will experience innovative team activities specifically designed for virtual teams that will build engagement and increased productivity.

Session 4: Harnessing the Power of Cultural Diversity (2 hours)
Have you ever been frustrated, when working with colleagues from other countries and cultures by the fact that they do things in ways that are fundamentally different to your own? That their priorities in the workplace differ from yours? That they seem to send you mixed messages. Virtual teams face both opportunities and challenges. Many organizations are trying to understand how to manage a multicultural workforce. In this session we will look at some of the challenges you might experience working in a multi-cultural environment and devote time to exploring solutions.

Session 5: Managing Offshore Teams for High Performance (2 hours)
Teams that work together at the same location face challenges in their day-to-day interactions. A team with global team members makes for an even tougher situation. Time zones, lack of face-to -face interaction, travel budget restrictions, miscommunication, linguistic challenges and cultural differences all impact the team’s ability to be effective.

Session 6: How to Optimize Virtual Team Meetings (2 hours)
Virtual meetings are the lifeblood of the virtual team, yet we hear the same challenges over and over again: late starts, later finishes, private agendas, loss of control by the meeting facilitator, and multitasking by disengaged attendees. These common problems cost your organization lost productivity, missed deadlines, and potentially thousands of dollars due to a poorly run virtual meeting. In order to be effective, these meetings must be well organized, efficient, and structured. This session details techniques that will optimize any virtual meeting.

Session 7: Brainstorming the Virtual Way (2 hours)
Virtual meetings are the lifeblood of the virtual team, yet we hear the same challenges over and over again: late starts, later finishes, private agendas, loss of control by the meeting facilitator, and multitasking by disengaged attendees. These common problems cost your organization lost productivity, missed deadlines, and potentially thousands of dollars due to a poorly run virtual meeting. In order to be effective, these meetings must be well organized, efficient, and structured. This session details techniques that will optimize any virtual meeting.

Session 8: Making your Online Learning Stick (2 hours)
All too often, a webinar leads to a one-way event with the speaker addressing the audience and limited audience interaction. It doesn’t have to be this way. A webinar can be just as interactive as a face-to-face session; you just have to know how to carry it out. Conducting webinars requires a different set of skills than classroom training. Webinars can be a highly interactive session where participants interact with each other using a web-conferencing tool and a phone. This session will take you through an approach that will help you be as brilliant online as you are in class.

Session 9: Virtual Team Simulation (4 hours)
We believe that our clients need to fully understand the importance of effective virtual communications in everyday business and relationships. The purpose of the Simulation is to provide an experiential virtual learning opportunity to practice and apply the skills you have learned during the modules.

That’s right, this is a virtual program taught live, in a real-time highly interactive virtual environment. Each session deals with a specific aspect of the Virtual  Environment. You won’t be just talking about the learned techniques — you will be experiencing them throughout each session.
